The national energy opportunity

An energy resource.
Replenished every year.

Waste and biomass can become a nation's equivalent of perpetual, distributed oil fields—close to the people and industries that need energy.

01 / Annual resources

Generated nationwide.

Communities, industry and agriculture generate waste and biomass year after year—an energy resource already distributed across the country.

Why this changes the energy equation

Think of a country's recurring waste and biomass as the equivalent of perpetual, distributed oil fields. These resources are generated again each year, across communities, industry and agriculture—often close to where energy is needed.

Superior conversion changes their value. Concord Blue's patented CBR® technology transforms prepared feedstock into high-value syngas: a platform for low-carbon power, industrial energy, hydrogen and synthesized fuels. Recovered CBR® process heat also supports adsorption cooling.

Standardized, modular Reformers® make local deployment scalable. Short feedstock routes and nearby energy offtake connect domestic resources with domestic demand, creating a decentralized foundation for affordable, resilient and sustainable sovereign energy security.

Superior conversion technology
changes the value of waste.

≈31,400TWh per year

Theoretical annual syngas energy.

Theoretical global natural-gas displacement potential.

Energy-equivalent basis · 2024 global consumption

UNEP estimates that more than 11 billion metric tons of solid waste are collected worldwide each year. Concord Blue® estimates an annual CBR® feedstock potential of 6.5 billion metric tons of waste and biomass residues. With our superior conversion technology, this resource could theoretically yield syngas energy equivalent to 76% of global natural-gas consumption.

Local resources.
Global energy significance.

Superior conversion technology unlocks the energy in underused waste and biomass, turning resources communities already generate into valuable domestic energy. Standardized, local CBR® facilities can make this resource an important part of a leading sovereign energy mix.

Why this potential matters

Resilient. Affordable. Sustainable.

Concord Blue® estimates an annual CBR® feedstock potential of 6.5 billion metric tons of waste and biomass residues. With our superior conversion technology, this resource could theoretically produce approximately 31,400 TWh of syngas energy annually—equivalent to 76% of global natural-gas consumption in 2024.

We show this potential to reveal the extraordinary energy value that superior conversion technology can unlock from underused resources. With superior conversion technology, waste and biomass become a disruptive, highly valuable energy resource. Communities already generate these resources; the opportunity is to convert them into dependable energy and valuable molecules.

Standardized, modular CBR® facilities bring conversion close to industry, communities, AI and data centers. Shorter waste-transport routes and nearby energy distribution strengthen resilience and reduce dependence on imported fuels.

Superior waste conversion—standardized, localized, affordable, flexible and sustainable—must play an important role in a leading sovereign energy mix.

The resource is already here.

Sources & calculation

Global waste context. UNEP estimates 11.2 billion metric tons of solid waste collected worldwide annually. Concord Blue®’s 6.5 billion metric tons is our estimate of potentially prepared CBR® feedstock from waste and biomass residues, not a UNEP suitability estimate or a measured fraction of its collected-waste total. UNEP: Solid waste management ↗

Feedstock basis. The calculation uses a prepared-feedstock reference condition of 25% moisture, with inert and otherwise unsuitable fractions removed. Moisture normalization puts different resources on a consistent mass-and-energy basis; it is a modeling condition, not a claim that all raw waste arrives at that moisture level.

Conversion calculation. 6.5 billion metric tons per year ÷ 50,000 metric tons per reference Reformer® = 130,000 theoretical Reformers®. At 66.885 million Nm³ of syngas per year and 13 MJ/Nm³ lower heating value, each reference Reformer® yields approximately 0.241529 TWh per year. Together: approximately 31,400 TWh of annual syngas energy. Source: Concord Blue® reference-case model.

Natural-gas comparison. The Energy Institute reports 2024 world natural-gas consumption of 148.6 EJ, equivalent to approximately 41,278 TWh. 31,399 ÷ 41,278 = 76.1%, rounded to 76%. Both figures use a net-calorific energy basis. Energy Institute: Statistical Review of World Energy 2025, pages 40 and 69 ↗

What the comparison shows. The scale of energy in the modeled resource if converted through the selected CBR® reference case. It compares syngas chemical energy with natural-gas chemical energy. Actual displacement depends on available feedstock, conversion performance and end-use suitability; the figure is not electricity output or a deployment forecast.

02 / WHAT IS THE CBR®?

Advanced Gasification.
Staged Reforming.

Steam Thermolysis separates solid conversion from gas-phase reforming.

Inside the technology

The Concord Blue Reformer® (CBR®) is our patented Advanced Gasification technology and the facility implementing it. Its core combines Steam Thermolysis and Staged Reforming: prepared feedstock is converted in one stage, while the resulting gas is upgraded in a separate high-temperature stage.

Circulating ceramic heat carriers supply heat from a separate heat-generation system. This separation supports broad feedstock flexibility and high-quality, hydrogen-rich syngas.

A Reformer® is one standardized module. A CBR® facility can combine one or more Reformers® with feedstock preparation, gas conditioning and the downstream systems required for its selected products.
